ROMEO AND JULIET WANT THEIR
INDEPENDENCE TOO… FROM ITALY!
THE VERONA CITY COUNCIL APPROVES MOTION
FOR  INDEPENDENCE REFERENDUM OF THE VENETO

The second biggest city in the Veneto region votes 20 to 9 (and 1 abstained) in favor of holding a regional referendum to give back to Veneto the independence it had before 1866. Another 30 cities have voted for the motion.

VERONA (Venetia) – The move is unprecedented. The city council of  Verona, one of the most powerful and rich cities in Italy, has voted in favor of holding a referendum asking voters in the Veneto Region if they want to break away from Italy and regain their prior independence.

Frustration runs very high among industrialists and workers alike in the city of Romeo and Juliet, a few miles away from the beautiful Garda Lake, home of Valpollicella and Soave wines, industrial muscle of a once rich Veneto.

Now the crisis is hitting, and it’s hitting hard. All time high unemployment, records in suicides among employers and employees alike, rising robberies and crime, pervasive factory shut downs. The Veneto economic miracle of the ’80s and ’90s, the thriving industrial land of the Benettons, Marzottos, Stefanels, Luxottica and such, is no more.

Things are abuzz in fair Verona. The situation is so dire that even a right wing post-Fascist nationalist city council man (those who brag more loudly about a united Italy) has voted in favor of the motion. “I wanted my vote to be a loud cry to make the Italian government understand it has to face the problem of Veneto – said councilperson Vittorio Di Dio, member of Northern League mayor Flavio Tosi’s coalition, but formerly in the Italian National Alliance – If you really want to help the South, you have to give tax-breaks to businesses who create employment. Not guaranteeing funding from public hubs of waste!”

The major lobbying pressure to make cities vote for motions in favor of holding the referendum has been concerted by Lodovico Pizzati, leader of the Venetian independentist movement, under a new initiative called “Plebiscite 2013”, whose self-evident goal, as the title indicates, is to hold the referendum this year, Oct. 6th as suggested  by a commission of jurists nominated by Veneto governor Luca Zaia.

Already 30 small, medium and big cities in Veneto have voted in favor, putting pressure on the Regional assembly to face the inevitable vote to approve or block the Referendum.

“Venice is procrastinating – complained Regional councilperson Stefano Valdegamberi, from the centrist Futuro Popolare party – we were supposed to vote at the end of July, early August, and now there’s talk of moving the vote till later, probably because of problems within the ruling majority. But the popular vote, expressed by the voting of such city council motions, proves that people want this referendum. It is time to approve it.
